When you visit Heidelberg and you stay at the Weisser Bock Hotel, you are not a tourist in our city. As soon as you arrive in your nice room, in the middle of the historic center, you will become a real Heidelberg native for the duration of your stay: Car? No need. Sights? All within walking distance. Cappuccino? Available on every corner. An early drink? We like to take it at lunchtime and enjoy the view of the hustle and bustle in the alleys of the old town.

YOU ARE HERE! When you enter “Weisser Bock” in the search field of your smartphone’s map app, you first have to find your way through a jungle of different colored flags. No wonder, since all the sights, cafés and restaurants, museums and educational institutions are close together in the city center. Students meet tourists from the Far East and locals meet visitors with a regional background – this is where life pulsates!

No matter if you are a first-timer or a long-term regular. Those who have arrived and checked in usually want to explore Heidelberg right away – and the Hotel Weisser Bock is the perfect starting point for that. For those who can’t wait to stretch their legs in their new surroundings, we have designed a short tour through our immediate neighborhood. This way you know right away where you are and get to know the most charming corners of our old town.

Große Mantelgasse 24 – that’s our address (A/K). Take a right out of our hotel and walk along the alley past the Heumarkt up to the main street, and you’ll find yourself right in the middle of probably the longest pedestrian zone in Europe, with a length of 1.6 kilometers. Up here on the corner, thousands of students of the social sciences bustle about every day. No wonder, because the Universitätsplatz (B) forms the link between the New University, the university library, several faculties and two student canteens.

Down Marstallstraße. Why not follow the flow of students toward the banks of the Neckar? Especially on sunny days, they are drawn to the so-called Marstall (C). The massive sandstone building from the early 16th century now houses a student canteen that has won several awards as the best of its kind. Even without a student ID, you are welcome to immerse yourself in student life in the picturesque beer garden. However, only enrolled students can enjoy the discounted prices. Passing OK KOOL (D) – probably the coolest and tastiest ice cream parlor in Heidelberg – we continue towards the banks of the Neckar.

The Old Bridge in view. Along the Neckar promenade we head towards the city’s most famous landmarks. The Karl-Theodor Bridge, usually called the “Old Bridge” (E), connects the old town with the Neuenheim district to the north. It is worth getting your camera out here, as not only the bridge is worth taking a photo of, but also the view of the castle is breathtaking. Courageous models also stick their heads into the monkey sculpture that guards the bridgehead: a guaranteed “like” on Instagram.

Florian Steiner Coffee Roasting (F). Along the peaceful Obere Neckarstraße we pass the store of our coffee supplier. Every Saturday, Florian Steiner opens his beautiful roastery to the public and invites you to try his fine Heidelberg coffee specialties. Just a few steps away is the Bent Bar and its terrace offshoot “Frollein Bent” (G). These two small venues are among Heidelberg’s top addresses for enjoying cocktails. And then? Quickly up the Leyergasse!

The Kulturbrauerei Heidelberg (H). Halfway between Neckarmünzplatz and Karlsplatz is our big sister establishment, the Kulturbrauerei. The unique ensemble includes the hotel, an in-house brewery, our restaurant and a rustic beer garden. Unlike Weisser Bock, we serve hearty regional food and fresh home-brewed beer there, which can also be taken home in decorative champagne bottles for at-home enjoyment. Gasthaus zum Seppl (I). Heidelberg’s oldest historic student pub, the Gasthaus zum Seppl, is located in the immediate neighborhood of the Kulturbrauerei. Today, the house with its rustic interior is part of the Kulturbrauerei ensemble and is used as an event location for family and company celebrations. But it’s not just the Seppl that’s worth taking a photo of – nowhere is it better to take a picture of the castle scenery than here on Karlsplatz.

Across the market square. Slowly it is time to return to the Weisser Bock, to rest and refresh ourselves. The way back takes us across the market square, past the city’s imposing town hall and the famous Heiliggeistkirche (J). Around the sacred building with Gothic and Baroque elements pulsates the touristic Heidelberg. In the surrounding cafés, you can hear all the languages of the world in summer. But if you turn into Untere Straße at the Fischmarkt, you’ll find yourself right back in the middle of Heidelberg’s student-authentic nightlife in the evening hours. The iconic nightlife mile ends at Heumarkt and thus in close proximity to our starting point, the Hotel Weisser Bock (A/K).
